The main objective of this work is to gather information about the baritone saxophone, both on its physical development since its construction and on the evolution of the repertoire.
In the first part of the paper we will discuss the construction of the instrument; how it survived over the years despite all the obstacles it had to face. We will deal with its first patent, development, modifications and improvements that it underwent. We will also cover the characteristics of the
baritone saxophone, talking about its vibrato and what kind of music it was used for, and is still used for, having a prominent role today.
We will divide the repertoire into four different sections: the first from its invention until the death of Adolphe Sax, 1841-1894; the second until the saxophone began to be studied at the Paris Conservatory, 1942; the third until the composition of Oxyton, an important piece in the repertoire with baritone
that contrasts with all the above, 1991; and finally from 1991 to the present day.
